  Chapter One

I’m following a butterfly through a forest. Insane, I know, but I’m dreaming and it’s a pretty butterfly. It looks like a Panacea Prola with its four different shades of blue wings and black tips. I only know about Panacea Prola butterflies because I was obsessed with butterfly photography for about 6 months when I was a kid. That’s why I am following this one.

It skirts around the tall oak trees with a finesse that only winged creatures possess. The butterfly erupts through the woods and I stumble out behind it. The scene before my eyes is breathtaking. I’m in a field of grass so green and plush it feels like carpet under my bare feet. The sun is shining down on me and its warmth feels like a spring day back home. It’s the perfect mix of summer warmth and winter breeze. There is a lake about a yard ahead of me and the water is so clear I can see the multicolored fish swimming in it from here. Everything looks brighter, from the puffy white clouds in the baby blue sky to the neon green blades of grass at my feet. I imagine this is what Dorothy felt like walking out of her house into Oz.

My Butterfly flies back towards me circling me as if it wants my attention, and then flies off to land on top of a yellow flower near the edge of the lake. I walk over to the edge of the lake and sit down on my knees with my bottom touching my feet. The water is just as crystal clear as I thought. I dip my hand in the water and it’s surprisingly warm. A fish, the size of a Koi fish and the color of a Lisa Frank artwork, swims up to my fingers and brushes up against them. Its actions remind me of Mama’s lazy house cat when it wants to be petted. I stroke the back of its scales and it feels smooth against my hand. What weird dream is this that the fish act like cats? My butterfly flies to the flower next to me as if it also wants to be petted.

“Well, I haven’t forgotten you, little fella.” I say to the butterfly.

I take my hand out of the water and wipe it off against my nightgown.

I reach out to touch the little butterfly when I hear, “Caution human, I would not do that if I were you.”

The voice frightens me and I jump at the sound of it. When I turn around a man is standing behind me. He is wearing nothing but dark linen pants that stop just above his ankles. His feet are bare and he is shirtless.

I’m pretty sure it is illegal to carry around the guns he is carrying. His arms are rippling with thick corded muscles. His chest looks as hard as stone and I have never seen a six pack that nice, not even the ones that say Bud Light. If Rykan is built like a model, this man is built like a Greek God. I would not be surprised if he says his name is Zeus, or Poseidon.

“Are you alright?” he questions, and his voice has the sound of suppressed laughter in it.

It’s probably because I’ve been staring at his body all this time. But, it’s an amazing body. For Heaven’s sake Lilly look at his face. I force my eyes up to look at his face. Not bad. He’s not as attractive as Assassin, but Assassin has that self−assuredness that makes his looks even better. Nevertheless, this guy is still HOT. Strong bone structure, a slight crook in his nose, a full bottom lip, a sexy dusting of facial hair along his jawline, and oval shaped eyes. He was definitely a catch. Probably the most stunning thing about him is his eyes; he has one dark blue and one light gray.

“Kipka’s are not as friendly as the Punya fish.” The Greek Adonis explains, pointing back at the butterfly in front of me.

I turn around to find that the beautiful butterfly I thought I saw is actually a winged creature that looks more like a large spider rather than a butterfly. It flashes its fangs and hiss at me. I jump to my feet and back away into the arms of Greek Adonis.

“Its fangs are poisonous and would have killed you within seconds.” His words are whispered near my ear.

I turn around to thank him and find myself being sucked into his mix matched eyes. I take an abrupt step back finding myself a little too close for comfort.

“I’m sorry if my face has frightened you.”

He took my action the wrong way.

“Why would your face frighten me?”

There is no way a man this hot should have self-esteem issues.

He turns his face to the side and I notice, for the first time, he has a large jagged scar running down the length of his face. It starts at his hair line and ends under his chin.

“What, that?” I chuckle. “Trust me, I’ve seen worse scars than that. Yours is nothing compared to Ms. Witley’s tummy tuck scar.”

He raises one of his dark thick eyebrows up in confusion. So I explain.

“Ms. Witley lives on lot 9c at the trailer park I grew up on. Only a month after her husband died, she took all his insurance money and went and got a tummy tuck down in Mexico. Well, apparently the doctor she went to didn’t sterilize his equipment. She ended up with an infection so bad it ate away most of her skin before she went to another doctor. Mama and Aunt Millie said it served her right for burying her husband in that cheap pine box so she could keep all the life insurance money. Even so, it still don’t stop her from going to Walmart in her bikini top, even though her stomach looks like lumpy oatmeal.

So you shouldn’t be ashamed of a simple scar. Besides, with those beautiful eyes and your body, a girl would be crazy to be frightened by you.”

I have a soft spot for people with self-esteem issues. If I can make someone feel beautiful I’ll go out of my way to do it. Funny how I can do it for other people, but could never seem to do it for myself.

The Greek Adonis throws back his head and laughs a booming laugh that makes me smile.

“You, human, are a joy.” He says when he finishes laughing. “I have never had someone make me feel so good about myself before. Thank you!” He bows slightly.

“No problem.” I wave off his thank you.

  It’s then I realize I’m still dreaming.

“So, how come you’re in my dream?”

I mean if I was going to dream about a half-naked man, I would have thought it would be Rykan or even the Assassin, but not someone I’ve never met before. Although, I’m not complaining.

“It seems we have gotten our dreams crossed.” He looks around at our surroundings as if he’s just now noticing them.

  “Is that normal here?”

“Sometimes!” he turns back to me. “I am Nevy, by the way.” He extends a hand out to me. I grasp his hand and shake.

“Lilly. With two L’s instead of one.” I say, then cringe at how lame that sounded.

I swear my head loses brain cells around attractive men. How I made it through anything with Rykan is beyond me.

  “Lilly, like the beautiful flower?”

“Yes! When my mama told my daddy she was pregnant, he went out and picked he
r a bunch of wild Calla Lilies. It was the last gift he gave her before he died. In his honor she named me after the flowers. They’re also her favorites.”

“What about you, what of your favorite flowers, Lilly?”

I think for a moment, remembering the way my mother looks every time she tells me that story. How it makes me feel to hear how much I was loved by my father before he ever met me and I answer, “Calla Lilies.”

As soon as I say the words I am surrounded by Calla Lilies of all shades. I spin around in circles in amazement. There are dark color Calla Lilies, white ones that remind me of weddings and funerals, multicolored Calla Lilies that look hand painted and colors that do not appear naturally in nature.

“How did this happen?” I pick out a hot pink Calla Lily that’s by my feet and spin it around in my fingers.

“This is a dream. You can create any object you like.” Nevy says, and a black lily appears in his hand.

“So I can imagine anything I want, and it just appears?”

  “Yes.”

“So I can imagine a strawberry milkshake, French fries, and a cheeseburger and it will appear?”

He laughs. “I have no idea what you are talking about. But, if you can picture it in your head you can make it appear.”

Oh he should have never said that. I close my eyes and picture a scene in my head. When I hear his intake of breath I open my eyes.

“What is this?” he asks in bewilderment.

It’s amazing! It came out exactly how I imagined it. A picnic set up with all the best greasy fast foods surrounded by the most beautiful versions of Calla Lilies ever. The food here is nice and all, but it’s too rich for my taste.

I grab Nevy’s hand and pull him over to the red and white checkered blanket. I sit down and he drops down beside me. I pick up the strawberry milkshake and hand it to him and then pick up the other one. I take a long sip from my milkshake and nod my head encouragingly for him to do the same. He copies my actions and when his eyes close in that way that only really unhealthy food can make you do, I know he is hooked.

  “What is this wonderful beverage?”

  “It’s a strawberry milkshake.”

  Nevy takes another long sip.

“I taste the cow’s milk, and some sort of fruit, strawberry you say?” I nod and he takes another sip. “But what is that other flavor?”

“Sugar.” I answer like a proud addict introducing someone else to my favorite drug.

  “In a beverage?”

The look on his face suggests this is the craziest thing he has ever heard of.

“Trust me, my friend. We are only getting started.” I reply as I pat his shoulder.

Two more milkshakes, three double cheeseburgers, a Philly cheese steak, one large pizza, two large fries, and countless amounts of dessert later, Nevy and I are lying side by side on the blanket looking up at the sky.

As far as dream guys go, Nevy is the best. He and I have talked about everything from animals of the Locke, to our childhood, to some of our favorite things. I know that he is a farmer and that he was raised by his single Mother. He was bullied as a kid because of his mix match eyes. I told him how I was bullied because I was mixed. He thought that was stupid, and I agreed. I learned we both suffer from the only child/clingy mother syndrome and that his mother died a while ago. I think I know more about Nevy than I do anyone else in the world. Even more than I know about the father of my twins, by the way that topic has not come up.

I was never the popular girl, or the girl that guys asked out. I was considered the girl you hook up and make out with, but you didn’t date her in public. I didn’t meet a guy, until Rykan, that actually made me feel beautiful and of value. And we all know how that turned out. Now, Nevy is here and he makes me feel all the things that Rykan did, and this time I asked if he was married, engaged, or even dating. He said no!

“I don’t think I can eat anything else for a week.” I say, rubbing my belly after we had sat in silence for a while.

“Yes, I do feel a bit sluggish.”

“It’s called a good food hangover. Don’t worry, it will pass. Good thing this is just a dream, you don’t have to worry about calories and weight gain.”

“Aye!” he agrees. We lie in peace and silence enjoying the breeze and the smell of fresh cut grass and fragrant flowers.

“So, will I be able to meet you when I’m awake, or is this a dream thing?”

“Would you want that?” He turns on his side to face me and props up with his elbow.

I turn my head and face him. “Yes!” I say with an honest smile.

The thought of meeting Nevy in person and spending more time with him gives me something to look forward to.

“I love to see you smile.” He admits this with a frown, as if this realization bothers him.

“Then I will do it more often around you.” I smile again.

He matches my smile with a grin of his own. I turn my head and stare back up at the puffs of clouds above. I can still feel Nevy’s intense eyes on the side of my face.

“May I ask you something personal?” I nod.

I can’t imagine what else he wants to know about me. We have pretty much discussed every topic imaginable.

“Why are you here? What brings you from your realm to ours?” Except that one.

I sigh. Well, here it is folks, the moment my dream becomes reality. I need to get use to this, I will have to tell plenty of men the truth and watch them run away. I only pray I don’t have to settle like my Mama did and end up marrying and asshole like Billy Ray.

I close my eyes. I don’t want to see the look on his face when I tell him.

“I am six weeks pregnant by a man that is engaged. I am not safe in my own world. So I am here, in a foreign world, alone.”

Nevy doesn’t respond at first. For a moment I think he has run away, and then he reaches out and touches my arm. I open my eyes, not to the look of judgment that I was expecting, but one of compassion.

“Do you love the father of your young?”

That was a good question, Nevy. I haven’t known Rykan long enough to love him. I like him, and even care for him, but I don’t love him.

  “No!” I simply reply.

Maybe if we’d had more time we could have grown to love each other. However that is not our story.

His mix match eyes spark with anger as he says, “Do not worry, Lilly, I will make sure that no one ever misuses you again. I can protect you and your unborn.”

Tears spring to my eyes at his declaration. Now I know this is just a dream and Nevy isn’t real. I never thought I would hear someone say that to me. It is more than I would have ever imagined. I was about to say something back to him when I hear a voice.

“Milady, tis time to wake up!”

When I look back down Nevy is starting to fade and so is our dream world.

“Nevy!?” I panic and reach out to him.

“Do not fret, Lilly, I cannot keep you here forever. But soon, My Love. Soon!”

I feel his lips brush across mine right as the dream world completely fades and I am lying in a soft bed surrounded by a crystal surface.

“Milady, are you well?” a voice above me ask, fighting through my grogginess.

I sit up in bed to find a little brunette elf with a heart shaped face and sparkling green eyes. She is startled by my abrupt rise and she jumps back. I was going to apologize when that sinking feeling in my stomach hits and I bolt out of bed to the bathroom. I make it to the toilet right as I hurl. Oddly, I taste pizza and cheeseburger.

“Where is she?” I hear the Assassin’s voice from my bedroom.

“In the bath chamber, she just woke up and rushed in there.” The heart faced little elf explains.

“Lilly!” Assassin calls for me, his voice getting closer to the bathroom.

“Don’t come in.” I warn with my head still in the toilet. “It’s not a pretty sight.”

“Nonsense.” His voice comes from right behind me. />
He kneels down beside me holding my hair back as I continue to empty my stomach content. Once I have nothing else in my body to give the porcelain monster, Assassin pulls a thick cord over my head and the toilet flushes. He leaves my side for a moment, and then returns with a cold rag that he uses to wipe my face.

“Thank you!” I say, as I sit back on my knees.

I probably should be embarrassed after puking in front of a hot guy, but pregnancy takes so many liberties with your body that it would be useless to be ashamed of them all.

“I guess it’s time for breakfast.”

Assassin smiles, “More like lunch, little human.”

“What time is it?” I’m fully alert now.

“It is mid-day. You have slept through morning.”

My mouth opens so wide I could swallow a cow whole, which I am now hungry enough to do.

“Why did you let me sleep that late?” I spring to my feet and rush out of the bathroom.

I hear Assassin behind me laughing.

“The servants tried to wake you, you would not budge. This is why they sent for me, they feared you were not well.”

Back in the bedroom the servants have been efficient. They have already made my bed and laid my dress for today across the bed. I turn to face Assassin and notice he is wearing all black today, which should be illegal if they don’t want women fainting and tossing their panties at him all day. I look down at my feet, so I won’t be one of said women, and say, “Can you ask them to leave so I can get dress?” My voice is barely above a whisper.

He takes a step closer to me and with one finger lifts my head to see my eyes.

“Never speak to me or anyone looking down at your feet.” He reprimands kindly. “And, if you want them to leave, just ask.”

Easy for him to say, he wasn’t a foreigner in a strange land. Instead of pointing this out, I take his advice. I turn back around to the four women eagerly waiting to dress me and pamper me.

With my head held I high I say, “Can I please have the room to myself?”
